Pay Rate: $134,560-$181,129 annually (based on experience), plus benefits.
The Yarmouth Fire Department is seeking an experienced and dedicated fire service professional to serve as Deputy Fire Chief, with primary responsibility for overseeing the department’s fire training program. This senior leadership position plays a critical role in ensuring the operational readiness, safety, and professional development of all fire personnel, while also supporting accurate and timely reporting of fire department activity.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead, develop, and manage the department’s comprehensive training program, including fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, EMS, and officer development.
• Evaluate training needs and implement strategies to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal standards.
• Coordinate with command staff to schedule and conduct regular drills, simulations, and continuing education programs.
• Supervise training staff and instructors; monitor performance and ensure high instructional standards.
• Design and oversee structured onboarding and field training programs for new hires to ensure safe, consistent, and mission-aligned integration into the department.
• Develop and implement officer development programs that prepare personnel for leadership roles and promotional opportunities.
• Build and manage a formal mentoring program to cultivate future leaders from within the ranks, emphasizing professionalism, accountability, and department values.
• Maintain accurate and complete fire training records and certifications for all personnel.
• Oversee and ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timely submission of fire incident reports and related data in accordance with NFIRS/NERIS and department protocols.
• Assist in incident command at major emergencies as required.
• Support the Fire Chief in administrative and operational duties, and act in their absence as needed.
• Collaborate with regional training programs, fire academies, and mutual aid partners.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Fire Science; Master’s Degree preferred. Seven to ten (7-10) years related work experience in a municipal fire department with a minimum of four (4) years in a supervisory or command level including EMS or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Special Requirements:
Class D Motor Vehicle Driver’s License; Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts EMT or Paramedic License, Certified Fire Officer One, Certified Fire Officer Two, Certified Fire Instructor One, Certified Fire Prevention Officer One. Fire Safety Officer, and Massachusetts Fire Chief Credentialing preferred. As a condition of employment, the Deputy Fire Chief is required to successfully complete a CORI certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience managing fire training programs in a career department.
• Experience developing onboarding, officer development, and mentoring programs.
• Knowledge of NFPA standards, OSHA regulations, and Massachusetts fire training and reporting requirements.
• Familiarity with NFIRS/NERIS and fire records management systems.
• Strong background in curriculum development and adult learning principles.
