UPCOMING EVENT: Reading the Fireground & Leadership Points

Presented by Orlando Fire Department Assistant Chief Walter Lewis

During the morning program titled, “Reading the Fireground” Chief Lewis will discuss the imperative nature of how critical reading the fireground is for a first due officer and incident commander. Realizing the known and reducing the number of unknowns can help reduce the information overload one experiences on the fireground and provide for a higher likelihood of a successful outcome. Our personnel trust us to know these differences and apply the correct strategy and tactics to eliminate them during fire suppression operations. This program is designed to work with firefighters and fire officers on enhancing their situation recognition, decision-making, and tactical comprehension. In the afternoon session titled “Leadership Points”, Chief Lewis will discuss the need for personnel to assume leadership of situations and emergencies regardless of their level of seniority, rank, certification, or proficiency. While many do, many miss the mark. This program will instigate thoughtful discussion, incite examples of good and bad leadership, and inspire those to take it upon themselves to lead when necessary. Leadership is an action that when applied, points in the right direction.

Walter Lewis has been a firefighter since 1990, currently at the rank of Assistant Chief for the Orlando Fire Department. He began his time as a volunteer, then later as a paid firefighter in a bedroom community fire department. In 1996, he joined the Orlando Fire Department and has served on some of the busiest units and within special operations. He is a continual student of the fire service, has contributed to works such as the State of Florida Live Fire Training Instructor curriculum, written articles for various publications including Fire Engineering, has presented locally and nationally on fire and US&R topics, is a charter member of the Orlando Fire Conference and is a founding member of the Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society (FOOLS).
